Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok
by Tim Georgi

Meet Mayura. She's just your typical 16-year old high school student with a penchant for the paranormal. She loves a good mystery and longs to be a detective, but despite being the daughter of a Shinto priest, she has a terrible lack of vision as far as "spiritual" things are concerned.

Meet Loki. He's just your typical prankster and fallen god, cast down by Odin, and trapped in the body of a child. Banished by the almighty Odin, Loki has been cast down to Earth and trapped inside the body of a human boy, limiting his powers. Loki and his trusted assistant Yamino have opened the Enjaku Detective Agency, turning their attentions to investigating the stange and out-of-the-ordinary occurances around town.

One day, Mayura is checking out a local haunted house, having heard rumors of the ghosts inside. There she finds a possessed doll which mistakes Mayura for its owner. Mayura takes the doll home, intent on showing the doll to all her friends. Once at home, a black cat enters her room and steals the doll. Mayura chases after the cat but is unable to keep up and loses the doll. While searching, she came across the Enjaku Detective Agency and decides to seek some professional help with the search. Inside she meets Yamino and Loki and tells them about her plight.

Initially blowing off Mayura and her story, Loki senses something is amiss and decides to investigate the situation. He finds the source of the disturbance inside the haunted house where Mayura finds the evil doll waiting for her. Loki and Yamino learn the history of the house and the doll just in time to save Mayura from the ghost inside the doll.

The bigger mystery is revolving around Loki himself. Loki, better known in Norse mythology as the god of mischief, has been banished to Earth by Odin for reasons that he doesn't yet understand. The only way he can return to the realm of the gods is by collecting the evil auras which take over the hearts of the humans on Earth. As time passes, other Norse gods and characters appear, some of whom befriend and work with Loki and others of whom are intent on disposing of him.

To add to the fun, we look back to the title of the series. In Norse mythology, Ragnarok refers to a series of major events, essentially the Norse Apocalyspe, including a great battle foretold to ultimately result in the death of a number of major figures, including the gods Odin, Thor, Freyr, Heimdall, and Loki himself. Could that be why the gods want Loki eliminated?

The series is fun and a bit light-hearted, but does have its moments of action and danger. Mysteries are, of course, a must. Mayura adds a much needed aire of silliness in the right places, just enough to keep Loki interesting. If you're looking for a series that is big on mystery, but has a little bit of everything, Loki is a great place to look.
